Fabric Study

In this session we introduced to different fabric types and what each one says about the person who would wear them. This was interesting to learn about how the colour, texture and breakdown of a fabric, can influence how a character might be portrayed.

We also discussed sustainability and how useful it is to use in the costume industry.

During the second half of the session, we looked through different numbered fabrics and had to match them to the names of the types of fabric. We also learnt about how productions will often need repeats of costumes such as in films when they have to retake scenes if an actor is getting wet or if a different person is wearing it such as stunt doubles.

7.11.23

In this lesson we were each given a costume drawing of a character and were tasked to choose out of a box of fabric which one you could use for each piece of the costume. This helped give an insight into what it’s like for a costume maker after being given a drawing and then having the freedom to source fabrics that match the drawing. Similarly, as costume designers it made you more aware on how specific your final design needs to be to enable people to easily see seams and patterns on fabrics. I found this task quite hard and will re-visit it.

Seams and Hems

We learnt different seams and hems and how they react to different fabrics. This helped me find out how different seams and hems don’t work on certain fabrics.

Overall, I found our fabric worked best with each technique as it was fairly sturdy.
